About medical cannabis

Is medical cannabis legal in the UK?

Yes. Since 1 November 2018, doctors on the GMC Specialist Register have been able to prescribe cannabis-based products for medicinal use. Your prescription is a private one, written by a specialist doctor, and we can only dispense it once we have the original paper prescription and have confirmed it meets all the legal requirements.

Your medication is prescribed for you alone. It's an offence for anyone else to use it.

Who can prescribe medical cannabis?

Only a doctor on the GMC Specialist Register can start a medical cannabis prescription. In practice, most patients get their prescription through a specialist clinic. Your GP can't prescribe it, but they can refer you to a clinic.

We're a pharmacy, not a clinic, so we can't assess you or write prescriptions. If you don't yet have one, the first step is a consultation with a specialist. You can book a consultation here.

Is medical cannabis available on the NHS?

Very rarely. Almost every medical cannabis prescription in the UK is private. We dispense private prescriptions only, so everything we supply is paid for by you before it's delivered.

Are there side effects?

As with any medicine, some people have side effects. Your prescriber will have talked these through with you and is the right person to speak to if something doesn't feel right. Our pharmacist is also happy to answer questions about your medication on 0161 399 0066.

You can report a suspected side effect to the MHRA through the Yellow Card scheme. If you feel seriously unwell, contact NHS 111 or, in an emergency, call 999.

Can I drive while taking medical cannabis?

Don't drive if you feel impaired in any way. The law on driving and prescribed medicines is strict, and it's your responsibility to be fit to drive. Ask your prescriber for advice about your medication and driving, and keep proof of your prescription with you when you travel.

Can I travel with my medication?

Within the UK, keep your medication in the packaging we dispensed it in, with the pharmacy label showing, and carry proof of your prescription. If you're travelling abroad, check the rules of the country you're visiting well before you go. Many countries don't allow medical cannabis at all, and the rules for leaving the UK with it are set by the Home Office and the MHRA.

Your prescription

Do I need to send you anything?

No. Your clinic posts your original paper prescription straight to us. By law we need the original before we can dispense, so we can't work from a photo, a scan or an email copy. Once it arrives and our pharmacist has checked it, we'll be in touch with your payment link.

How long is my prescription valid?

A prescription for a controlled drug is valid for 28 days from the date written on it. If it isn't dispensed within that time, it expires and your clinic will need to write a new one. That's one reason to ask for your repeat in good time.

When should I ask for my repeat prescription?

Ask your clinic well before you run out. Allow time for the clinic to write the prescription and post it to us, for us to check it and for any medication that needs ordering in. A week's notice is a sensible rule of thumb. Every supply needs a new prescription from your clinic; we can't dispense the same one twice.

Can I change something on my prescription?

Not once it's written. A controlled drug prescription can't be altered by us or by you. If you'd like a different product or quantity, or something on your prescription isn't available, contact your clinic and they can issue a new prescription.

What if my medication is out of stock?

If a product on your prescription isn't available, we'll contact you straight away. Your clinic can then issue a prescription for a suitable alternative, or we can wait for stock to arrive if that's your preference. You won't be charged for anything we can't supply, and anything you've already paid for that we can't obtain is refunded in full.

Do you publish a list of the products you stock?

No. What you're prescribed is a decision for your specialist, and the law doesn't allow pharmacies to advertise prescription medicines. If your clinic asks us about availability of a particular product, we'll tell them. If something on your prescription isn't available, we'll let you know.

Can I have a copy of my prescription?

The original paper prescription has to stay with the pharmacy; the law requires us to keep it and send it on to the NHS Business Services Authority. If you need something to show you've been prescribed your medication, contact us and we'll help.

My medication isn't working for me. What should I do?

Talk to your prescriber. Only they can change your dose or your medication. We can't alter a prescription or take medication back, but we're happy to pass on any questions about how to use it.

Paying

How do I pay?

By card, through a secure payment link we send you by text and email once our pharmacist has checked your prescription. The link shows the full cost, including delivery, before you pay anything. We use Stripe to take payments, so no card details are ever entered on our website or seen by us.

What do you charge?

The price of your medication, plus £4.99 for delivery by Royal Mail Tracked 24. If you ask us to send your prescription in more than one parcel, for example the items we have in stock now and the rest once they arrive, each extra delivery is £4.99. The exact total is on your payment link, and the price you see there is the price you pay. Our Terms & Conditions set out the details.

Why has the price of my medication changed since last time?

Medication prices are set by the manufacturers and wholesalers, and they do change. We pass on the current price each time, so it can go up or down between prescriptions. The price on your payment link is always the one that applies.

Do you dispense NHS prescriptions?

No. We dispense private prescriptions only.

Delivery

How long will it take to get my medication?

Once your clinic has posted us your original prescription and our pharmacist has checked it, we send you a payment link by text and email.

If your medication is in stock and you pay before 1pm on a working day, we dispatch it the same day and Royal Mail aim to deliver the next working day. If it isn't in stock, we order it specifically for you as soon as you've paid. It usually reaches us within 2 to 3 working days, and we send it out on the day it arrives.

Either way, you'll get an email with your tracking number the moment it leaves us. If anything holds things up, we'll tell you rather than leave you wondering.

How is my medication delivered?

By Royal Mail Tracked 24, which needs a signature on delivery. Medical cannabis is a controlled drug, so the parcel can't be left in a safe place, with a neighbour or through the letterbox. If you're out, Royal Mail leave a card and you can rearrange delivery or collect from your local delivery office.

We deliver to addresses in the UK. Your tracking number is emailed to you when the parcel is dispatched, so you can follow it all the way to your door.

Can I collect my medication from you?

No. We're an online pharmacy rather than a high-street one, and we don't have a counter or a walk-in service. Every prescription we dispense is delivered by tracked, signed-for Royal Mail. This keeps the pharmacy secure and means you don't need to travel to us.

Can someone else sign for my parcel?

Royal Mail need a signature from someone at the address. Because your medication is a controlled drug prescribed to you alone, please make sure whoever signs will pass it straight to you unopened.

Can I change my delivery address?

Before we've dispatched your order, yes. Contact us as soon as possible and we'll confirm the new address with you before anything is sent. Once a parcel is with Royal Mail we can't redirect it.

What if my parcel is lost or doesn't arrive?

Check your tracking first, then contact us straight away. We'll investigate with Royal Mail and, once the parcel is confirmed lost, refund you in line with your legal rights. Because medical cannabis is a controlled drug, a replacement needs a new prescription from your prescriber, so it's worth telling your clinic at the same time.

How is my medication packaged?

In a sealed, tamper-evident box with nothing on the outside to say what's inside. Your dispensing label is on the medication itself, inside the parcel.

Returns and problems

Can I return my medication or get a refund?

Medical cannabis is a controlled drug, so once it has left the pharmacy it can't be dispensed to anyone else. That means we can't accept returns or give refunds simply because a medication doesn't suit you. If that happens, please talk to your prescriber, who can change your prescription.

If something is wrong with what you've received, such as a damaged product or a mistake on our part, contact us within 48 hours of delivery with photos and we'll put it right. Please don't send anything back unless we ask you to. Our Terms & Conditions set this out in full.

There's a problem with what I've received

Please don't use the medication. Contact us within 48 hours of delivery, with photos of the problem and your prescription reference, and we'll sort it out. If we've made a mistake, we'll put it right at no cost to you.

How do I dispose of medication I no longer need?

Take it to any NHS community pharmacy. They accept unwanted medicines for safe disposal, including controlled drugs. Please don't put it in household waste or flush it away.

How do I make a complaint?

We'd rather hear about a problem than not. Contact us by phone, email or post, and see our Complaints & feedback page for how we handle it and where you can go if you're not satisfied with our response.

Using your medication

How should I store my medication?

In the packaging we dispensed it in, somewhere cool and dry, out of sight and reach of children. Keep the pharmacy label on it; it's your proof that the medication was legally prescribed to you.

Can I use my medication differently from how it was prescribed?

Please use it exactly as your prescriber directed. Medical cannabis comes in specific forms with dosing instructions designed for consistent, safe effects, and changing how you take it can change how much you're actually getting. If you'd like to try a different form or method, speak to your prescriber first.

I have a question about my dose or how to use my medication

Call or email us and ask to speak to the pharmacist; we're happy to help with how to use what you've been prescribed. Anything that would change your treatment, such as a different dose, a different product or a repeat prescription, goes to your prescribing clinic.
